Wednesday, September 25th, 2013
The camaraderie shared in the South Zone conferences promoted the idea of Local Conferences and the first ever Local Conference was held in 1984 at Chennai. Active canvassing by George Achen, now Rt Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius resulted in a record 100 delegates at Model Matriculation School at Tondiarpet. mmtlc   kalo_smallEarly in the 80’s a drive to collect funds resulted in the Kalotsav I (Kala meaning culture and Utsav meaning festival.) The members of the Parish, with a surprise realised that forthe first time the Youth were conducting a ticketed show. The rave reviews after the show boosted the confidence of the youth and lead to further editions of the same in the next few years, thus re naming Kalotsav as Kalotsav I to accommodate II and III. projects The youth of 1995 came together and catalysed an outreach program that fructified a a haven of hope for for women at Sri perumbudur. In a remarkable show of purposeful action the Asha Bhavan was established in 1996. Today it stands as an achievement of youth power. Asha Bhavan with an enhanced capacity of 40 residents is presently being run by the Madras Mar Thoma Charitable Trust

South Zone Conferences

It was in the early 60’s that the 1st Bahya Kerala South Zone Youth assembled at Tambaram although the outside Madras participation was minimal. Bangalore promptly organized the next camp at UTC Bangalore. This also fizzled out. However it was under the leadership of Rev P T Joseph , the now Metropolitan Joseph Mar Iraeneaus , that about 80 students met for a 3 day conference at Guindy. This was in the year 1967. There are stories of how Joseph achen went from house to house canvassing for delegates. Unfortunately this spark also did not catch fire. The council put Jacob Achen (who was a Council member) of Bangalore in charge of regularizing this and in the year 1973 a camp was held at UTC . The rest is history   confrence_list
